Abstract

The assessment of the concentration of ions in the blood is a marker frequently used to evaluate patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome caused by the virus Coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) in critical condition and is especially important in patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICU) Objective: To compare an indirect potentiometric method and a direct potentiometric method in serum samples for the quantification of Na+ (sodium), K+ (potassium), and Cl- (chlorine) ions. The study was carried out with samples from patients hospitalized at Rawson Hospital, Córdoba, Argentina using the Laboratory Service Quality Manual documents as a guide. Materials and Methods: We worked with 50 patients diagnosed with SARS CoV-2 admitted to the ICU wards, and the analytes Na+, K+ and Cl- were quantified in serum. The MedCalc® program was used. Results: Na+: Correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9884 [95%CI:(0.9796-0.9934)]; p<0.0001. By Passing-Bablok procedure, line: y=4.1613[95%CI:(-3.1533 - 8.4688)]+0.9677[95%CI:(0.9375 - 1.0219)]x. K+: It gave an r of 0.9989 [95% CI: (0.9980 - 0.9994)]; p<0.0001. By Passing-Bablok procedure, line: y=0.3477[95%CI:(0.2975 - 0.4018)]+0.9362[95%CI:(0.9213 - 0.9500)]x. Cl-: It gave an r of 0.9847 [95% CI: (0.9730 - 0.9913)]; p<0.0001. By Passing-Bablok procedure, line: y =-0.5702[95%CI:(-6.3248 - 3.5492)]+1.0268 [95%CI:(0.9545 - 1.0828)]x. Conclusion: The comparison of methods showed a satisfactory correlation between the Abbott Architect C4000 and Roche Cobas b221equipment for the determination of Na+ and Cl-, confirming that both methods measure in a similar way. For K+, future studies should increase the number of data evaluated, seeking for a better correlation, since r is a statistic sensitive to the extremes of the reportable range.
