Abstract
Syphilis is a disease caused by Treponema pallidum, whose coinfection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is frequent. At the Interzonal General Hospital of acute patients Prof. Dr. Rodolfo Rossi, from the city of La Plata, we have perceived an increase in the number of new cases of syphilis in the last years. Objective: To evaluate the frequency of syphilis cases and coinfection with HIV at our hospital between January of 2014 and July of 2018 and to study the distribution by sex, age range and requesting services. Material and methods: We performed a retrospective longitudinal study, for which we collected results of serology for syphilis, VIH coinfection, sex, age, and requesting services between January of 2014 and July of 2018, and included patients older than 16 years old. Results: The total number of new cases was 3.42%, 2.69%, 3.26%,
42.16% and 5.46% in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 respectively with a p < 0.05. From these, 13.23%, 2.59%, 19.48%, 21.74% and 10.23% corresponded to patients coinfected with HIV and 44%, 18%, 32%, 47% and 50% corresponded to females. The main requesting services were the Clinic (25.77%) and Sanitary Units
