Abstract

Introduction: Osteocalcin increases insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity through adiponectin secretion, and energy consumption, and decreases plasma glucose and body mass and stimulates pancreatic beta cells. In addition, it has been recently shown that osteocalcin is responsible for a mutual regulation between energetic metabolism and the bone. Objectives: To evaluate whether there is a correlation between serum levels of osteocalcin, insulin-resistance markers, inflammation biomarkers and other metabolic markers in an adult population diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome (MS). Materials and methods: A total of 95 patients were included: 58 women and 37 men with a mean age of 51.5 ± 8.5 and 53.6 ± 9.3 years respectively, all with MS diagnosis according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program. Venous blood was drawn from each patient after 12 hours of fasting. The following analytes were dosed: osteocalcin, basal glycemia, insulin, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), glycosylated hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, Apoprotein A1, Apoprotein B, leptin and interleukin 6. Results: Osteocalcin values showed a negative correlation with: basal glycemia (r = -0.29, p = ≤ 0.005), TG (r = -0.24, p = ≤ 0.005), HbA1c (r = -0.23, p = ≤ 0.005) and the TG/HDL cholesterol index (r = -0.23, p≤ 0.005). Conclusions: Low osteocalcin levels were related to the increase in an insulin resistance indicator and poor metabolic control parameters and serum osteocalcin values were inversely associated with the risk of the appearance of adverse metabolic events.
