Abstract
Cervical cancer is the final stage of a series of progressive and atypical changes that occur in cervical cells. The National Cancer Institute classifies them as: low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of intraepithelial lesions in patients from the Laboratory MANLAB (Buenos Aires, Argentina) during 2012 and 2013 and to compare the results with those obtained from Tomás Ponsone Hospital, Coronel Moldes, Córdoba, Argentina. To this end, the statistical records of cytology samples of the MANLAB Cytology Laboratory (n=18336) and Tomás Ponsone Hospital (n = 724) were reviewed. Pearson Chi-square test and Fisher-Irwin exact test were used, using the InfoStat statistical software. In Tomás Ponsone Hospital, the low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions prevalence was 3.18% (n=23) whereas the high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions prevalence was 0.28 % (n=2). In the Laboratory MANLAB, the prevalence for low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions was 1.09 % (n=200) whereas that for high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions was 0.07% (n=13). Significant differences were found between the two institutions for low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (p<0.05) but not for high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions.
